Amanoi: Vietnam’s Most Remote Luxury Sanctuary
Accessible only via a winding coastal road through Nui Chua National Park, Amanoi is the Vietnamese outpost of Aman Resorts — a brand synonymous with spatial generosity, architectural restraint, and locations so remote that arrival feels like discovery. We spent three nights here in a Pavilion overlooking Vinh Hy Bay, and emerged feeling like we had been somewhere beyond the reach of ordinary travel.
Location & Arrival
Amanoi sits on a hillside above Vinh Hy Bay, a protected marine reserve 45 minutes south of Cam Ranh Airport. The approach is dramatic: the road climbs through dry tropical forest, then suddenly reveals a view of turquoise water framed by granite headlands. The resort’s entrance is unmarked — just a stone gate and a gravel driveway that descends through acacia trees to a cliff-edge reception pavilion.
The architecture, by Jean-Michel Gathy, is classic Aman: flat terracotta roofs, natural stone walls, and expanses of glass that dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape. Nothing is taller than the surrounding canopy. The buildings seem to grow from the hillside rather than sit upon it.
Pavilions & Villas
Our Ocean Pavilion was 95 square meters of minimalist perfection: a king bed positioned to face floor-to-ceiling windows, a private infinity pool, and an outdoor sala with daybeds shaded by a canvas canopy. The bathroom was larger than most hotel rooms, with a stone soaking tub, double vanities carved from a single block of marble, and an open-air rain shower surrounded by frangipani trees.
The design palette is restrained to the point of asceticism: cream linens, dark timber, stone floors, and exactly one piece of Vietnamese art — a ceramic sculpture by a Ninh Binh artisan. There is no television. The Wi-Fi is present but discouraged. This is a place designed for presence, not distraction.
What We Loved
- The Beach Club is reached by a wooden staircase descending through boulders to a private cove with powder-white sand. The water is snorkel-clear, and the house reef teems with juvenile fish. Amanoi provides complimentary kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear.
- The spa is set beside a lotus-filled lake and offers treatments using locally sourced sea salt, aloe vera, and Vietnamese herbal compresses. The 150-minute “Journey to Serenity” includes a body scrub, wrap, massage, and facial — possibly the best spa treatment we have experienced in Southeast Asia.
- The dining is hyper-local and hyper-seasonal. Breakfast includes dragon fruit and passion fruit from the resort’s organic garden. Dinner might feature line-caught squid, herbs foraged from the hillside, and rice from the nearby fields of Ninh Thuan.
Value for Money
Pavilions start at $850 per night, with Villas reaching $2,500+. This is unequivocally expensive, but within the context of Aman’s global portfolio, Amanoi is priced at the lower end. The rate includes airport transfers, breakfast, minibar, non-motorized watersports, and a daily activity (yoga, hiking, or cooking class). For travelers who value space, silence, and design integrity above all else, the price is justified.
Pro Tips
- Book the full-board dining package. The resort is too remote for off-property restaurants, and the culinary quality justifies the premium.
- Request a Pavilion on the eastern hillside for sunrise views over the bay. Western Pavilions get spectacular sunsets but stronger afternoon heat.
- The hike to the nearby Bai Nom fishing village (guided, 3 hours) offers an authentic glimpse of coastal life untouched by tourism. Do not miss it.
Who Should Stay Here
Honeymooners, burnt-out executives, and Aman junkies will find Amanoi transformative. It is emphatically not for families seeking kids’ clubs, party travelers, or anyone who needs urban stimulation. If your ideal vacation involves reading on a private terrace, swimming in clear water, and dining on food that has traveled less than 10 kilometers, Amanoi is Vietnam’s finest expression of that philosophy.
Final Verdict: 4.9/5 — The most architecturally significant and spiritually restorative resort in Vietnam. Amanoi does not compete with other hotels; it operates in a category of one.
